Homelessness the next big trend
By newsguy | November 26, 2008
We live in a world of statistics with a number for everything and everyone. There are 301,139,947 people living in the United States, and counting. But not all of these people live on the same social and economic plane. Many of these people, (744000) go with out a roof and any form of security.
As our economy continues to sing deeper and deeper into a recession and jobs become more and more scares this number may very well skyrocket. Already families are enduring the hardships that go along with this current situation.
Shelters all over America are struggling to contend with this flow of needy people. There isn’t enough food, space, clothes and funding. In fact almost no funding is given out to shelters from the federal government. During Reagan’s term he cut all funding for homeless programs. He believed it is the states problem to deal with, but they didn’t and still don’t have the money to put into this problem.
The people on the streets are a widely diverse group. Many have substance abuse problems or mental/physical shortcomings. These issues make them unmarketable in the already stagnate job market.
Homelessness is such and overwhelming stigma that many people don’t even feel pity for these people. They wonder how they can be homeless, but it is a lot easier and common than they think.
With the economy heading as it is, we must keep a close eye on this alarming trend in social well-being. Who knows, you could be next.
