Ya Basta! Mexico’s Underground War
By newsguy | November 9, 2008
Mexico has had enough and they are calling for support in their war. A war that can’t be seen nor fought through the use of tanks and bombs. They are fighting a war in the streets for their very lives. But each day, everyday at least 10 more people are kidnapped from their homes and held for ransom.
On the surface this country, though not a key player in the world circuit, appears to be sound and safer than that of Iraq or Iran. In reality Mexico is just as volatile and unstable as these countries without the press coverage.
With Mexico’s intense poverty levels people are turning to the lucrative criminal act of kidnapping for exorbitant ransoms. While their families are contacted and negotiated with, these victims are held in deplorable conditions. Kidnappers often use videos of the family member or even send body parts (fingers) to provoke the family to pay up.
What makes this recent phenomenon even worse is the corruption in Mexico’s police force. These men and women who have taken and oath to protect are often the ones helping or even performing the kidnapping. So there seems no safe place to turn.
Even if they are not a part of the kidnapping ring, they are not dedicated to the investigation of kidnappings/murders. Mexico doesn’t have investigators, they have prosecutors that handle the case from the comfort of a cubical, never seeing the real crime scene. For every 10 murders/kidnappings 9 will go unpunished and the 1 that is punished may very well be the wrong man. They just want to lock someone up, regardless of guilt.
This is a video that explains a bit more about this situation.
