Equality in Proposals
By newsguy | November 7, 2008
‘I do.’ To words that bind, the audible pronouncement of two peoples love. The start of a life together supposedly forever, until death do they part. Though love is universal man has made these words, this symbol of commitment, a subjective right. Only a man and a woman may partake of this innate desire for connection, or so we have decided.
In the U.S. same sex marriage peppers state ballets and people can’t seem to drop the subject. With 50 states all making their own decision, composed of gays/lesbians, homophobes, and heterosexuals that support, this issue can have a wide variety of outcomes.
A few states such as Massachusetts give this opportunity to all its citizens, declaring love and marriage to be the right of everyone. However, other states even those that seem liberal and open-minded are stuck in this prejudice rut.
Only days ago, both California and Florida banned same sex marriage, leaving many of their citizens without hope. This direct denial of people’s rights as human being is in my opinion innately wrong and in no way their choice to make. How can we as humans judge others for whom they love and wish to be with?
These new propositions that passed not only affect same sex marriage but also domestic partnership of gays, lesbians, and heterosexuals. Evening going so far as to deny them visitation rights if
their partner were in the hospital.
America, though seemingly forward thinking, still has a lot to learn about how to treat others. Prejudice, racism, and sexism still run wild in the hearts and minds of this country’s citizens. Perhaps in the future people will begin to see that all men and women have the right to choose their own lover from among all people, not just the socially exceptable gender bank.

Equality for all! Gay marriage should be recognized.
