American Execution
By News Desk | September 23, 2008
The United States claims to be a civilized and sophisticated nation, who protects its citizens and those of the world. America is said to be synonymous with incorruptibility, fighting for human rights. But how can a nation make such claims when within their borders they practice institutions that violate human rights on all levels? To kill another being, is to act in the most inhumane ways, whether it is in the heat of the moment or condoned by the judicial system. Murder is murder there are no excuse.
It is now 2008; we are in the age of technological advances and peaceful innovations, yet still we cling to the punishments of old. The death penalty is still in practice today, kill indiscriminately those who have been condemned. How could such an archaic practice be allowed to flourish in this new age?
As humans we are all equal, so how can we believe that we have the right to implement the final punishment in any case. No justice can be found in the murder of another, each life is precious regardless of what we see in it. Being merely human we cannot judge, we see only part of the picture. To kill those on death row makes us no better than that person who murdered first.
Also our jury system is flawed, how can we know beyond doubt that a person is guilty? It is impossible and yet we still execute these persons. In fact over 100 people have been released from death row after new evidence came to light pertaining to their innocence. Image the number of innocents we killed for ‘justice’. So many deaths because we think that’s what the answer is.
Of the ‘civilized’ world we are one of the only countries that still in ploy such a terrible and irreversible punishment.
So what is your opinion on this matter? Is execution wrong or the way to go?
