Humanities Ultimate Canvas
By News Desk | September 3, 2008
Artistically, human beings are constantly searching out new mediums of expression, banking on the weird and the unique to display their art. Throughout history paintings have left cloth canvases and made their mark on buildings. Designs have been cultivated out of stone, clay, and even garbage, but perhaps the most bizarre canvas of artists their bodies themselves.
While clothes and piercing are a form of art upon the body, it is tattooing that is the purest and most permanent of body art. Each inked in symbol, shows not only the skill of the artist on what has got to be the worlds most unpredictable surface, but also an aspect of the canvas’s life.
This is a field in which innovation is priced, and a steady hand a must. But were does this art end? What is to far? Apparently tattoo-ists haven’t found it yet, as they explore new means of tattooing. The eye for example is the newest acquisition in this art. For a price, and with more guts than I’ve got, you can ink in your eyes. This is a new technique that despite the danger is very sought after. People need to be the most bizarre.
An even more interesting, though perhaps not as shocking innovation, is blacklight tattoos. These tattoos appear invisible unless thrust under a blacklight. Then they take on an alien illumination, glowing masterpieces.
I personally I find tattoos to be beautiful, but also a huge responsibility. They help define a person, giving them a style people so often crave. But more than that they pay homage to art and to people’s lives. In that they are truly the most personal of art forms.
I suppose how far you go is ultimately up to the individual, but how far is to far in your opinion?
