What’s a Doctor to do?
By News Desk | September 2, 2008
Recently 46-year old Dr Razzak wrote a letter to the General Medical Council to be struck off the medical register as a result of having affairs with patients. He is just one of the many cases of doctors in this situation. Though it is said that having sex with patients is completely off-limits, 40% of medical students that were asked said they didn’t see the harm in doing it. Recent studies show it happens mostly with psychiatrists, gynecologists, and GPs or more clearly the doctors that spend more time with patients talking over problems. They have come to the conclusion that 1 out of every 10 family doctors have had a sexual relationship with a patient. To be honest I think it’s disgusting. Most of the cases involved in this situation were with doctors that were helping patients with emotional problems and things of that nature. It’s basically a doctor taking advantage of that patients vulnerable situation and benefiting from it.
Recently interviewed, Dr Goldie states: “With professionalism comes boundaries.” He says there is a need for much more education and discussion among doctors to help them deal with the doctor/patient relationship, including asking students their attitudes at the start of their training and, if necessary, attempting to change them. At the end of the day this is not about sex between a man and a woman, but potential –even if unknowing –exploitation of vulnerability. And as Hippocrates said, the first duty of a doctor is to do no harm. And with this statement I sort of agree. Asking students in advance will help prevent or correct the problem early on so it decreases.

I loved this article. It has many key points and does not stray off topic. It was well written. I loved the image with the article. It has such an impact to what the article is saying. I think that this is a topic, most people, and a mojority of women need to realize. You can be taken advantage of by anyone. Whether or not they are trying to help you out with your emoions. I know as a women I am more vulnerable like that. I loved the topic choice and the article over all. Job well done young lady.
