Dead Sea Scrolls to be Displayed Online?
By News Desk | August 27, 2008
The Dead Sea Scrolls are among the most examined and studied documents on the earth. The 2,000-year-old scrolls were found in 1945 in caves near the Dead Sea east of Jerusalem. The scrolls contain, except for Esther, the earliest known copies of every book in the Hebrew Bible.
Half a dozen specialists have decided they want to make the Dead Sea Scrolls available to everyone on the Internet. They plant to take pictures of every page (over a thousand pages) and digitally enhance and display them online. This is incredible considering how sought-after the scrolls are. They are among the most important sources of information on the Christian and Jewish life.
“The project began as a conservation necessity,” Ms. Shor (one of the keepers of the scrolls) explained. “We wanted to monitor the deterioration of the scrolls and realized we needed to take precise photographs to watch the process. That’s when we decided to do a comprehensive set of photos, both in color and infrared, to monitor selectively what is happening. We realized then that we could make the entire set of pictures available online to everyone, meaning that anyone will be able to see the scrolls in the kind of detail that no one has until now.”
Some scrolls will be sent to museums but doing so is risky because exposing the scrolls to heat, light, and humidity causes them to deteriorate. One the project is completed, which will take one to two years, every under graduate will have the opportunity to access the scrolls.

I really like the article, and i think that making the dead sea scrolls available on the internet is one of the smartest ideas. Many people want to sea the dead sea scrolls just because they are so historical.
