Mayhem? Or Diplomacy? Were will the conflict go??
By News Desk | August 11, 2008
Humanity imposes boarders, yet they change with every passing century. States grow, devouring lesser countries, to extend their limits. This organic seeming need to acquire new territory has fueled war and conflicts sense the beginning of organized civilization. Even in our modern world we cannot escape this ravenous appetite as is so evident in the Russia – Georgia conflict.
The uneasy peace between Russia and Georgia broke down as Georgia made advance on the province of South Ossetia. Their attempt to reclaim this area after 16 years of semi-independence brought a retaliatory strike from Russia.
European diplomats are watching this conflict, desperately hoping to prevent the any further escalation. They see this situation as a product of disproportionate force and headstrong desire for advancement. While the Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili, pleads with European officials saying “If the whole world does not stop Russia today then Russian tanks will be able to reach any other European capital.” they seem unwilling to add enter into the conflict.
While NATO is calling for a ceasefire and for diplomatic discussions to begin neither country seem ready to back down. New violence is reported daily on both sides, while accusations ricochet from the lips of the power players. Georgia blames Russia for the attacks on many key targets with in their boarders including Tbilisi. While Russia claims that Georgians killed three troops around the South Ossetia capital.
Only time will tell what will happen. With the violence be soothed with diplomatic words, and bandaged in a compromise? Or will the mayhem ensue?
