Mass Transit Counterproductive?
By News Desk | August 1, 2008
Using mass transit is great for people who pride themselves with going green, but still mass transit leaves a huge carbon footprint on the Earth. How can we help this? We can do a simple easy thing that will make a huge impact. We can recycle on mass transit. Trains and planes have plenty of travelers and all those thirsty travelers drink their sodas and waters and what have you and where does it go? Generally straight to the trash.
Now there is this myth that the airlines have people hired that go through trash afterwards pulling the recyclable out of the rubbish. I can neither confirm nor deny these claims since I am not informed enough on this but what I do know is that if you are paying these people to dig through trash then you are wasting money better spent somewhere else. Just put up a recycle bin people, its just that simple or just designate a trashcan you already have to be a recycling receptacle.
Airlines may have some sort of recycling program but Amtrak has no onboard recycling program to be seen. They are very happy to post the results of their recycling which are substantial but not nearly as much as they could be. In 2004 Amtrak recycled 171,485 gross tons of scrap metal, 153,885 lbs. of cable wire, and 50,195 lbs. of copper and lead. These things are great and helps out a lot but a simple recycle bin will help out so much more.
Saving the world may seem like a daunting task but it starts out with small things like placing recycle bins wherever people would be throwing away reusable materials. If you would like to do something small that could make a huge difference then visit this site to determine who is you congress representative and send him or her a letter asking them to pressure companies like Amtrak into recycling.
