Mad Cow Disease Rears Its Ugly Head
By newsguy | April 8, 2008
I don’t know what’s more disturbing: that Mad Cow’s baaaack (cue Poltergeist theme) or that the disease has its own web page—labeled official just in case you’re a fan of one of those unofficial pages.
But the disease is, of course, no laughing matter. And it has never really gone away. It has merely fallen off our radar. In fact, it’s so far off our radar that the Official Mad Cow Disease Home Page boasts it was last updated on 31st December, 1999.
Now it’s reported in Spain, with 2 deaths this week.
What does it mean when Mad Cow arises? The usual detective work of tracking the source and, most likely, decimating the potentially affected herd. It’s a sad waste of life for the animals that could have otherwise been at least contributing to hungry bellies through their death. For the victims, it means life or death.
The good news? These recent cases are linked to an old outbreak, according to the Spanish government. The outbreak predated restrictions on meat production. It simply took a decade for the victims to succumb.
Mad Cow hits when it hits, with little rhyme or reason, but it’s an ever-present risk for beef lovers.
