Spotted Eagle Ray Accident Leaves Woman Dead
By newsguy | March 20, 2008
A woman was killed today in the Florida Keys when a spotted eagle stingray leaped from the water and struck her as she sunbathed on a boat.
Information from the authorities is muddied and even they don’t seem to fully understand the chain of events. Local media reported that the ray’s barb pierced through her neck, causing her to fall backwards and hit her head on the boat. Whether it was the impact from the barb or the blow to the head that killed her is unclear.
Eagle rays can grow up to 17 feet and 500 pounds. They’re found commonly in tropical waters. They are not aggressive, and usually avoid interacting with humans. They are graceful creatures, as evidenced in this video taken by a diver.

Condolences to the family for their loss… but I think the media is overdramatizing the “death by ray.” Firstly, she was on the bow(front) of the boat going 25 miles per hour…. for a boat this is fast and potentially unsafe. At these speeds, unless someone is holding on very tight to something, it can be hazardous, not to mention the sea state that can cause increased choppiness and bouncing of the boat. It was probably a combination of the ray hitting her plus the speed and bouncing of the boat that caused her to lose her balance and fall. The ray would have had to have been flying horizontally like a rocket to knock her back and fall.
