I’d Rather Have MSG!
By newsguy | January 15, 2008
Imagine this: You sit down to a freshly-made sandwich and packet of chips. You’ve got your soda poured, and the clock’s ticking down to your football game. You reach for the jar of pickles, open it up, and grab the first one your fingers touch without looking.
Only as you put it on your plate you find it’s not a pickle at all, but a pickled mouse leg. How appealing does your lunch look now?

This is what happened to one woman in the Republic of Slovenia. Granted, her pickles may have been of the more European variety—similar to what Americans consider chutney—but either way it’s thoroughly disgusting. Yet when she complained to her country’s Health Ministry she was told it’s completely normal.
The excuse: mice wander the factories in which the pickles are produced and jarred. Mice get too close to the action, nice get chopped up, mice get preserved. Mice end up a tasty treat in a side dish or a cheese n’ pickle sandwich.
According to this article at Ananova, the spokeswoman for the Ministry said, “A mice-foot […] could be classified as a special additive to the pickles.”
Special additive? No thanks. I’d rather have MSG!
