Bigfoot’s Very Big Year
By newsguy | January 1, 2008
It’s been a great year for Sasquatch, aka Bigfoot, who’s found himself everything from a tourist attraction to an advertising campaign. And it’s not over: he’s soaring on search engine charts for popular terms as we reach the end of 2007. Here’s a look back on some of the highlights for Bigfoot’s Very Big Year:
- The Detroit News reports: 50 Sasquatch enthusiasts, $300 each…that’s $6000 shelled out for a hunt in July. The group said they found proof that Bigfoot exists but without a living, breathing specimen to back it up, the claims can’t hold much weight. Whether or not they solved the mystery, their expedition proves he’s still a market that floats.
- Speaking of market, who could escape the “Messin’ with Sasquatch” Jack Link’s beef jerky commercials? They were eye-catching, if rather silly. They must’ve done the trick, however, because the series grew throughout the course of the year. Between entertaining tourists and selling jerky, Sasquatch has earned a holiday.
- The Sasquatch Gang, an indie comedy by the makers of Napoleon Dynamite, came and went with little fuss or acclaim. Its 10 showings in November and December were mostly in Utah, where the film was financed. But it begs the question: if the flick hit it big, would Bigfoot choose the red carpet for his first-ever mainstream appearance? He’d be wise to capitalize on his marketing clout alone!
- This year’s Sasquatch Music Festival, held over Memorial Day weekend at The Gorge Ampitheatre in Washington state, is still generating buzz. Bjork, The Arcade Fire, Beastie Boys, Interpol, The Polyphonic Spree, and dozens of other artists spanning multiple genres made it a memorable weekend indeed. While Sasquatch failed to make the bill, he did take the stage—in the form of stage names; “Sasquatch”, “Wookie”, and “Yeti” were some of the stages graced by the industry’s top talent.
