I have a dream
By newsguy | October 2, 2007
Most of us have dreams. Things we want to see changed in the world. Some wrong we want made right.
Crystal Boyd had a dream.
She wanted the world to know what a horrific time a young woman from West Virgina had with a group of racist men earlier in September.
So, she did what many of us do when we feel silenced, like we are yelling, but nobody hears us. She got on Facebook.
At first, she invited 500 friends. Crystal simply wanted to tell them about this news article, about how a woman named Megan was also silenced. For Megan, her cries could not have been muffled at a worse time. Left completely helpless in a shack, beaten, raped and tortured, Megan had no voice.
And so Crystal, and her network of friends started spreading the word. Yes, it was too late to save Megan, however it was and is not too late to save the next victim of hate and silence and muffled cries.
The group on Facebook started at 500 people and has now grown to 145,500.
When asked about her response to the metoric growth of this simple Facebook blog, Crystal responds:
“I hope this generation will not only have a powerful voice, but [also] act on their anger…”
And acting we are. What was almost a forgotten news byte, is now the chatter of the global online community, and has spawned what some are calling “possible new dawn, of what Al Sharpton has begun calling the “Civil Rights Movement of the 21st Century”.
Well done Crystal. Thank-you for raising your voice loud enough for us to hear.
